橡胶绝缘电缆柔软性好，易弯曲，具有弹性，适宜多次拆装的线路，但耐电晕、耐臭氧、耐热、耐油的性能较差，因此只能做低压电缆使用。保护层结构为了防止机械损伤、电化学腐蚀和潮气侵入，电力电缆的缆芯和绝缘层有严密的保护层。现以交联聚乙烯绝缘、聚氯乙烯护套电力电缆为例说明电力电缆的保护层结构。
